HOUSTON, Texas – After winning the Region XIV tournament in its final season, the San Jacinto College women’s basketball team is going dancing for the second-straight year as the 15th seed in the 2018 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament, March 19-24 in Lubbock, Texas.
San Jac (24-10), seeded 15th in the national tournament, will face Hutchinson Community College (27-6, and seeded 18th) on Monday, March 19, at 2 p.m. CDT, at the Rip Griffin Center on the campus of Lubbock Christian University.
“I’m extremely excited and proud of this team,” said first-year Head Coach Kayla Weaver. “To win the Region XIV Tournament and get an automatic bid to the national tournament in our last year is special. Our motto all year has been ‘Own It.’ You can’t always control what happens to you but you can always control how you respond -- control how we handle adversity, how we handle ourselves in the classroom, and how we are on and off the court. This group is so much closer because of it. I am excited for them and for the opportunity to still be playing. “
San Jac was led this season by the Region XIV tournament MVP Eryka Sidney (Houston / Wheatley HS), and all-tournament selections Alexis Bryant (Pflugerville, Texas / Pflugerville HS) and Princess Clemons (Chester, Pennsylvania / Bonner Prendergrast Catholic HS). Sidney averages 17.2 points per game and is shooting nearly 39 percent from long range. She is second on the team in assists and steals per game at 4.4 and 1.6, respectively. Bryant is third on the San Jac team in scoring with a per game mark of 13.0 and is the team’s top rebounder at 8.9 per game. Clemons owns a 9.4 points per game mark, and grabbed 6.0 rebound per game this season. In addition, Alexus Jones (Dallas, Texas / Aledo HS) averages 13.6 points per game for San Jac.
As a team, San Jacinto College is shooting 43.7 percent from the field, 70.7 percent from the line, and averages 37.9 rebounds per game.
This will be the second national tournament appearance for the San Jacinto College women’s basketball team, and the first under Weaver. Last year, San Jac earned an at-large bid in its first-ever national tournament.
