HOUSTON — San Jacinto College (SJC) softball opens its 2012 season with record-breaking players at home against McLennan Community College on Feb. 8.
SJC finished last season fifth at the Region XIV tournament with a 40–21 record, marking the third 40-win season for the team. San Jacinto College returns a pair of record-breaking sophomores in outfielder Candyce Carter (Sweeny / Sweeny HS) and pitcher Shannon Millman (Pasadena / Memorial HS). Last season Carter hit 23 doubles, three better than the previous record, and Millman pitched 180 strikeouts, breaking the record of 172. As a team, San Jac broke the records for doubles (109), home runs (38), and strikeouts (350). Millman was also named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Midwest Region team, third-team NFCA All-American, and All-Region honors. Both also earned All-South Conference honors and recently signed national letters of intent to attend to continue their education and softball careers at Lamar University.
During offseason, softball Head Coach Kelly Saenz has had the team working on conditioning, fundamentals, and hitting. “We have been working on getting the players to feel their swings and perfecting our defensive plays,” said Saenz, who is entering her ninth season at the helm of the San Jacinto College softball program. “This year we will have more speed in the outfield and on the bases. If we can stay injury free, we should have a good run at the regional tournament.”
This season SJC welcomes Assistant Coach Kelsey McClain. The former SJC standout pitcher begins her first year as an assistant coach. McClain currently holds the SJC record for most wins in a season (31), innings pitched (263.33), and batting average against (0.107). After San Jac, she continued her softball career at McNeese State University, guiding the Cowboys to a 69–56 record. McClain is now pursuing her master’s degree at Texas Women’s University.
SJC takes on McLennan Community College at home on Feb. 8 at 1 p.m. All home games are played at the South Campus softball field located at 13735 Beamer Road in Houston and can be heard live online at www.legacysportsnetwork.com. For more information on SJC softball, visit www.sanjacsports.com.
