Gonzalez earns all-American honors

HOUSTON, Texas – San Jacinto College softball sophomore pitcher Niki Gonzalez (Baytown/ Ross P. Sterling HS) has been named first team all-American by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Softball committee.

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) also recently named Gonzalez second team NFCA NJCAA Division I all-American and first team NFCA Midwest Region. Sophomore catcher Katlin Kerl (Silsbee/ Silsbee HS) earned second team NFCA Midwest Region honors.

Several players also received all-Region, all-Conference and Region XIV all-Tournament honors. Gonzalez and freshman outfielder Taylor McHenry (Deer Park/ Deer Park HS) earned first team all-Region honors; second team all-Region honors went to Kerl, and sophomore infielders Missy Hernandez (Pasadena/ Pasadena Memorial HS) and Dani Damion (Angleton/ Angleton HS). First team all-Conference honors went to Gonzalez, Kerl, Damion, Hernandez, and McHenry. Second team all-Conference honors went to sophomore infielder Alexis Deleon (Katy/ Morton Ranch HS), freshman infielder Mackenzie Kotrla, (Angleton/ Angleton HS) and freshman outfielder Riley Bullen (League City/ Clear Creek HS). Damion and sophomore Isis Rangel (Pasadena/ Sam Rayburn HS) were also awarded Region XIV All-Academic Team for their work on the field and inside the classroom.

Head Coach Kelly Saenz and her coaching staff received the NFCA Midwest Coaching Staff of the year. The coaching staff is made up of Assistant Coach Kelsey Walters, Volunteer Assistant Coach Selena Reyna and Athletic Trainer Carie Mueller.

The San Jacinto College softball team finished the season with a 42-21 record. San Jac’s 42 wins this season mark the 10th time in school history with at least 40 wins. The softball team was 2017 NJCAA Region XIV champions and made its fourth trip to the NJCAA Division I Softball National Championship.
