Coaches’ polls favor San Jac basketball for 2016-2017

The 2016-2017 Region XIV coaches’ polls have been released, placing the San Jac men’s basketball team first in the South Zone out of seven teams and placing the women’s basketball team fourth out of 11 teams.

“I think this really shows how balanced our region is and has been,” said San Jac Men’s Basketball Head Coach Scott Gernander. “There were five teams that received first place votes (in men’s basketball) and three of them were on our South Zone side. It’s going to be another tough season. We finished with seven losses in our zone last year and we were still able to secure a bye in the region tournament. It doesn’t get any more competitive than that.”

The San Jac men’s basketball team finished the 2015-2016 season with a 22-10 overall record, advancing to the semifinals of the Region XIV tournament. The San Jac women’s basketball team finished the season with a 22-11 overall record, finishing as regional runner-up at the Region XIV tournament.

Women’s Basketball Head Coach Michael Madrid says Region XIV is generally regarded as one of the toughest conferences in the nation, and this year will be no different. The top three teams in the conference, respectively, are Trinity Valley Community College, Tyler Junior College, and Blinn College.

“Our conference is without a doubt nearly always one of the most competitive in the country,” he commented. “The coaching is outstanding, and the players are solid. Historically, Trinity Valley gets the nod from all the coaches. Tyler and Blinn always seem to be at the top of the standing so I feel because of their consistency, it’s no surprise those three would get listed high in our region.”

The men’s basketball team begins the 2016-2017 season at home in Pasadena, Texas playing against Lone Star College-Cy Fair on Tuesday, Nov. 1. This will be one of 14 home games. Victoria College (Nov. 11), Temple College (Nov. 15), Lone Star College-Kingwood (Nov. 22), Navarro College (Nov. 30), and Paris Junior College (Dec. 7) are among the home game teams they’ll play before the new year. The women’s basketball team’s first home game is against Temple College on Nov. 19, followed by a game against Kilgore College on Nov. 22.
