‘The Perm’ exhibit features student artwork

San Jacinto College will host “The Perm,” an exhibit of artwork by former students of the College through Sept. 23 at the South Campus Gallery. A public reception will be held on Sept. 7 from 1 to 4 p.m., during which guests can meet art and design faculty and students. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.
The South Campus is located at 13735 Beamer Road in the South Belt-Ellington area. The gallery is located in the Marie Flickinger Fine Arts Center, Building 15, Room 143.
“The Perm” includes artwork from alumni as part of the South Campus art and design program’s Permanent Collection. Forty art projects representing several media will be on display including painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. Many of the projects have won awards at juried exhibitions.
Jeffrey McGee, curator of the gallery and an art professor at the College, says that art and design remains a high-demand career field even in today’s high-tech and digital society.
“Art is a communication tool spoken in a language unique to each artist,” McGee commented. “As the world becomes more saturated with distractions, experiencing art can prompt the viewer to stop and think about one’s place within it. Additionally, creating art promotes critical thinking and problem solving, skills necessary for careers in all fields. At San Jacinto College, the arts provide students and community members with outlets for critical discourse and creative thought. Our courses are open to all students, no matter their experience level, and stress creative adaptation in a rapidly changing society.”
San Jacinto College offers art and design courses and degree options at all three campuses. To find out more, visit sanjac.edu/career/art-design.
