Holden, Davis, Gernander garner Region XIV honors

Holden is MVP; Gernander again named Coach of the Year

PASADENA, Texas – Marsell Holden and Flavien Davis have been named to the men’s basketball All-Region XIV team, and Head Coach Scott Gernander was named the Region XIV Co-Coach of the Year, the league announced this week.

Sophomore Marsell Holden, a 5-11 guard from Farrell, Pa. (Farrell HS), was named to the first team, while freshman Flavien Davis, a 6-5 forward from Milwaukee, Wis. (Wisconsin Lutheran HS), was named to the second team.

Holden led the team in scoring with 19.9 points per game, a mark that is 19th in the country. He shot 42 percent from the field this season, and was 90 percent from the charity stripe. Holden was the team’s top scorer from long range, connecting on 98 treys on the season. He was also named the conference’s most valuable player, and earned a spot on the conference All-tournament team.

Davis averaged 12 points per game this season, which was second on the squad, and shot 69 percent from the free throw line. He was second on the team in rebounding with a 6.9 per game mark. He was also named to the All-conference second team, and was named to the conference All-tournament team.

Gernander completed his 24th season at the helm of the San Jac men’s basketball program earning Region XIV coach of the year for the second-straight season. He and Jody Bailey of Jacksonville College share the coach of the year honors. Gernander led San Jac to a 27-3 overall record, a national ranking as high as second this season, and a top seed at the Region XIV tournament. San Jac advanced to the Region XIV championship game before falling to Lamar State-Port Arthur last Monday. The veteran coach owns a 638-157 (.803) career record in 24 years at San Jacinto College.

In addition, sophomores Daryell Taylor (Houston / Hightower HS) earned All-conference second team honors, and Lorenzo Freeman (Trenton, N.J. / River Bend HS [Fredericksburg, Va.]) received Region XIV honorable mention recognition. Taylor was the third San Jac player to average double-digit scoring at 11.5 points per game, shooting 39 percent from the field, while grabbing just under four rebounds per game. Freeman averaged 7.7 points and 6 rebounds per game.
