San Jac Certified: Staying the course

12.21.2015 | By Andrea Vasquez

It’s never too late to begin the journey toward accomplishing your goals. San Jacinto College alumna Sylvia Delgado’s journey began eight years ago and on December 13, 2015, reached an important milestone, as she graduated with her associate degree in business administration.

“San Jacinto College has given me a wealth of knowledge to pursue my graduate degree and has broadened my life's philosophy,” said the 44-year-old of her experience at the College.

Often times, nontraditional students feel they have to obtain their degree within a certain timeframe due to working full time, family obligations, etc., but Delgado says that trying to make a self-imposed deadline can actually do more harm than good. “I was having a difficult time managing my class schedule, making time to do the school work outside of class, and being a single parent. I decided to move forward by not limiting myself by being on a certain unreasonable deadline to complete my degree and just do whatever it took to accomplish my degree in my own time, no matter how long it would take.”

Like many students, Delgado held a full-time job while attending school. An employee at the Houston Yacht Club for the last 13 years in the accounts receivable department, she says that learning from many of the members and management inspired her to go back to school for her business administration degree. “The Houston Yacht Club has been instrumental in my professional and academic careers. I’ve learned so much from the members and management and they supported my decision to go back to school, allowing me to have schedule flexibility in order to attend my classes.”

Delgado plans to transfer to the University of Houston-Clear Lake to continue working toward her bachelor’s degree in business administration. She credits her continued determination to her family, who have been her biggest supporters in her educational endeavors. “My family was the core foundation in accomplishing my degree. Without them, I know none of this would be possible.”
