Women’s basketball enters NJCAA top 10

HOUSTON – The San Jacinto College women’s basketball jumped into the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) top 10 this week, coming in at number nine in the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball poll.

San Jac (12-3, 3-2) jumped from 12th in the previous poll after wins over Collin County Community College and McLennan Community College last weekend at the McLennan Classic in Waco. The team has won four of its last five games, dating back to early December.

When asked about the team’s key to success this season, first-year head coach Brenita Jackson simply said, “We are a team that wins together.”

San Jacinto College is led by sophomore guard Kendra Howard (Dallas / Cedar Hill HS). Howard, an all-conference and all-Region selection last season, averages 16 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. However, she’s not alone in double-digit scoring. Four other players also average 10 points or more, including Kaelynn Wilson (San Antonio / Wagner HS) (11.8), Anika Nottingham (Trinidad & Tobago / Mucurapo West Secondary School / Columbia State Community College) (11.4), Vanessa Jones (Flowermound / Flowermound HS) (10.7), and Nekeita Bailey (Housotn / Alief HS) (10.0).

“We work hard, and everyone is an option to score double digits on any night,” added Jackson. “Each player understands and agrees to sacrifice any individual success, so we can prevail as a team. The culture and environment that has been created here for women’s basketball is exciting and fun to be a part of.”

San Jac returns to the hard court this weekend when it hosts Paris Junior College on Saturday at 4 p.m., in a Region XIV match up. All San Jacinto College women’s basketball home games are played at Nichols Gymnasium on the San Jacinto College North Campus, located at 5800 Uvalde Road in Houston. Games are free and open to the public.
