SJCC Steel Band and Community Bands Concert
LOCATION: Slocomb Auditorium
On Monday, April 27 at 7 p.m. a mass steel band concert will be held in the auditorium of the Richard Slocomb Fine Arts Building. The concert will feature performances of the San Jacinto College steel band, the Parkview Intermediate School steel band, the League City Intermediate School steel band, and the newly-formed Sam Rayburn High School steel band. “These ‘community’ bands were formed to promote better integration within our local schools, provide a cultural awareness through music, and to spread the fun and love of playing the steel pan,” commented San Jacinto College music professor Michael Mizma, director of the College’s steel band. Each school will perform an individual session, and a culminating session will feature all bands performing three selections together. The concert will showcase a variety of musical genres: calypso, reggae, bossa nova, samba, guaguanco, songo, soca, rock, and pop.
