Softball to open 2018 season Jan. 27

HOUSTON – The San Jacinto College softball team will open its 2018 season with two home games on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 27 and 28, 2018 against Lakeland College and LSU Eunice, respectively.

Last year, San Jac earned its second straight, and fourth overall, bid to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championship, after claiming the Region XIV championship. San Jac went 2-2 at the national tournament to finish the season eighth in the nation. Head Coach Kelly Saenz is entering her 15th season at the helm of the San Jacinto College softball program with 10 returning players.

“We are looking forward to the 2018 season and facing some of the best teams in our Region and the nation,” said Saenz. “We have been working hard on the field this fall, and our team is prepared and ready to get the season started.”

Among the 10 returners is outfielder Taylor McHenry (Deer Park / Deer Park HS). McHenry was a first-team all-Region XIV and first-team all-South Region XIV selection last year. She hit .399 in 188 at-bats and knocked in 37 runs behind a team-high 75 hits. She led the squad in stolen bases with 20, which ranks seventh best in school history.

Joining McHenry as stand-out returners are utility player Mackenzie Kotrla (Angleton / Angleton HS) and outfielder Riley Bullen (League City / Clear Creek HS). Kotrla was a second-team all-South Region selection who hit .365 in 159 at-bats. She had 58 total hits, including 43 singles, 13 doubles and two home runs. Bullen was also a second-team all-Region XIV South selection. She hit .346 in 182 at-bats, posting 42 singles, 15 doubles, one triple and five home runs.

Joining the 10 returners are nine newcomers.

Following the opening weekend at home, San Jac will head South to Galveston Feb. 2-3 for the Galveston College tournament. San Jac will return home for the San Jac tournament Feb. 9-10 before hitting the road for seven straight road games.

The Region XIV season begins Friday, March 9 on the road at Coastal Bend College in Beeville. Region XIV home games include Alvin Community College (Friday, March 23), Galveston College (Saturday, March 24), Coastal Bend College (Friday, April 6), Laredo Community College (Saturday, April 7), and Lamar State College – Port Arthur (Saturday, April 14).

The Region XIV tournament will take place May 4 – 7 at a location in Region XIV South. The 2018 national championship tournament is May 16-19 in St. George, Utah.
