Softball jumps to 4th in NJCAA national rankings Amanda L. Booren -- March 18, 2014   HOUSTON – With a 24-10 overall record, including recent wins over several top-20 teams, the San Jacinto College softball team has made a name for itself on the national scene. After not appearing in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Top-20 poll for the first half of the 2014 season, San Jacinto College enters this week ranked fourth in the country. “This is great recognition for our team and players,” said 11th year Head Coach Kelly Saenz. “We work hard on the field every day in practice, and this is a true testament to the dedication that San Jacinto College softball players have for the game. We have played a competitive schedule, and had some success against some great teams. I'm looking forward to the remainder of the season.” This season, San Jac defeated then top-ranked Wallace State Community College in two of three meetings, and has had success against other previously ranked top-20 teams. San Jac defeated Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (No. 3), Iowa Western Community College (No. 12) on four occasions, Navarro College (No. 13), and McLennan Community College (No. 15). McLennan enters this week's poll as the top-ranked team in the country. San Jac is led by freshman catcher Carah Nunez (Tomball / St. Pius X HS) and sophomore utility player Sarah Ragsdale (Orange / West Orange – Stark HS). Nunez is hitting .398 in 103 at bats, with 41 hits, including 11 doubles and 25 RBI. Ragsdale, an all-tournament selection at the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Leadoff Classic last month, averages .387 in 111 at bats with 43 hits, seven doubles, and 16 RBI. As a team, San Jacinto College is hitting .300, while holding its opponents to a .243 mark. McLennan Community College tops this week's poll with a 24-5 overall record, followed by Chattanooga State Community College (Tenn.) at 25-3, Butler Community College (Kan.) (11-3), San Jacinto College (24-10), and Eastern Arizona College (20-3).
