The San Jacinto College men’s soccer team finished the 2015 season as the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XIV runners-up, 12-6-1 overall.
Opening the season with a 1-1 tie against Western Texas College, the team pursued on with wins against Paris Junior College (3-1), Northeast Texas College (4-0), Laredo Community College (3-1), and Coastal Bend Community College (1-0). After a mid-season loss to Tyler Junior College (1-2), momentum picked back up with more wins against Jacksonville College (4-1), Kansas City Community College (3-1), Northeast Texas College (7-2), Jacksonville College (8-0), Laredo Community College (4-0), and Coastal Bend College (2-1). The team fell to Tyler once again (0-2) but finished second in regular season play.
After receiving a bye in the first round of the NJCAA Region XIV playoffs, the team rallied against Paris Junior College for a final score of 1-0. Another win followed at the NJCAA District Semifinals against Pearl River College (2-1), but the team was unfortunately blocked from advancing to the national tournament after a loss to Tyler (0-2) in the District finals.
“It’s always difficult to get so close to making nationals, but now our goal is to build on this year’s freshman class for the following year,” said Men’s Soccer Head Coach Ian Spooner. “We have a good core coming back so our goal now is to work hard during offseason to prepare for another run for nationals next year.”
Tryouts for the 2016 season will be held on Friday, Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. at the South Campus soccer field. Tryouts are open to current San Jacinto College students and college transfers. Participants are required to bring their own shin guards and water. The South Campus is located at 13735 Beamer Road in Houston.
