San Jacinto College MLB stars returning to campus for Legends game

A highlight of the Tournament of Champions will be a “Legends” ceremony, during which former San Jacinto College baseball student-athletes who are either current or former MLB players will be recognized.

San Jacinto College will host the Tournament of Champions Feb. 6 through Feb. 8 that will feature baseball games between four colleges – Eastern Oklahoma State College (EOSC), Grayson College, Howard College, and San Jacinto College.

A highlight of the tournament will be a “Legends” game on Friday, Feb. 7 at approximately 4:30 p.m., during which former San Jacinto College baseball players will be recognized for their contributions. Professionals (and former professional players) who are scheduled to attend include Andy Pettitte (New York Yankees-retired), Brandon Belt (San Francisco Giants), Matt Albers (Houston Astros), Jesse Crain (Houston Astros), Mike Gonzalez (Milwaukee Brewers), Ryan Jorgensen (Florida Marlins-retired), Jared Wells (San Diego Padres), Nick Stavinoha (Hiroshima Toyo Carp), Robert Manuel (Cincinnati Reds-retired), Brandon Hicks (San Francisco Giants), and Lucas Luetge (Seattle Mariners).

“The San Jacinto College baseball program has a lengthy tradition of excellence,” commented Head Coach Tom Arrington, who this week begins his 13th season at the helm of the program. “The College has a reputation around the nation for sending players to the professional ranks, many who emerge as some of the most elite in the game. Fans who come out for the Legends ceremony will have a unique opportunity to see some of the best student athletes ever produced by San Jacinto College, and indeed some of the best to come out of any college. We are proud of these men who personify what great foundations in athletics and academics are available at San Jacinto College, and we hope many from the community can come out to show their support and appreciation.”

The games and the Legends ceremony will be held at John Ray Harrison Field, located at the San Jacinto College North Campus, 5800 Uvalde Road in Houston. All games are free and open to the public.

The Feb. 6 games will feature San Jacinto College vs. Howard at 12 p.m., Grayson vs. EOSC at 3 p.m., and Howard vs. EOSC at 6 p.m. On Feb. 7, Grayson will play Howard at 12 p.m., and San Jacinto College will play EOSC in the Legends game at 5 p.m. On Feb. 8, Howard will play Grayson at 11 a.m., San Jacinto College will play EOSC at 2 p.m., and San Jacinto College will play Grayson at 5 p.m.

Dan Mims, San Jacinto College Board of Trustees chairman, is scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch of the Legends game on Feb. 7. Mims will be recognized for his community service and contributions to San Jacinto College. Other trustees, and San Jacinto College Chancellor Dr. Brenda Hellyer, are scheduled to attend the Legends game. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for the ceremony.

The first conference game for San Jacinto College will be on Thursday, Feb. 20 when the team will host conference foe Galveston College in a double-header that starts at 4 p.m.
