San Jacinto College and Pasadena ISD to host Family Engagement Academy

Jan. 10 event will feature information on adult education, Internet safety and college

PASADENA, Texas – The Community Education Center of San Jacinto College and Pasadena Independent School District have partnered to host the Third Annual Family Engagement Academy on Jan. 10, 2017.

This free Academy, scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the College’s Central Campus, will offer information sessions for families to learn about college, nutrition, Internet safety and continuing education opportunities for adults who want to train for the workforce. The following is a full list of the day’s sessions.

Understanding the special education process
Special Ed 101 will provide an overview of the various special education programs, including related services, available in the district.

Family health and nutrition

Receive information about the benefits of a balanced diet that when combined with exercise leads to a healthy lifestyle.

Adult education opportunities
Learn about training opportunities at San Jacinto College and the Houston Gulf Coast Building and Construction Trades Council that offer noncredit courses for a variety of industries.

Do you want funding for a profession?
Obtain information on how to pay for an education and information on different types of aid: scholarships, loans, subsidized loans and unsubsidized loans. Learn the difference between a two-year college and a four-year university. Understand the difference between a public and a private university.

Find your voice
Participants will be able to distinguish between three forms of communication: passive, aggressive and assertive, and be able to assess their current level of communication and practice using their assertive language.

Technology: Social media and Internet safety-Ready Rosie
Educational presentation on Internet, phone and social media safety detailing dangers, cyberbullying, statistics, resources and reporting tools.
Registration for the Family Engagement Academy will begin in Slocomb Auditorium, Building 12, at 8:30 a.m., followed by a welcome at 9 a.m. by Gloria Gallegos, PISD associate superintendent of special programs.
