PASADENA, Texas – With a sweep of conference rival Lee College on Tuesday night, San Jacinto College Volleyball Head Coach Sharon Nelson recorded her 400th career win.
San Jac (22-10, 7-1) scored a big win when it defeated Lee College in straight sets, 27-25, 25-20, 25-15, but it was an even bigger win – the 400th, to be exact – for Head Coach Sharon Nelson. That ranks her sixth among active National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I volleyball head coaches.
“We are so proud of Coach Nelson and all she has accomplished throughout her nearly 14-year career here at San Jacinto College,” said Dr. Allatia Harris, vice chancellor for strategic initiatives, who oversees the San Jacinto College athletics program. “Not only has she produced consistent, winning teams on the court, but her volleyball student-athletes are excellent role models and citizens off the court.”
Nelson, who is in her 14th season at the helm of the San Jacinto College volleyball program, owns an overall record at San Jacinto College, to date, of 400-137. Nelson has produced 20-plus wins in each of her 13 seasons at San Jac, including seven seasons with 30 or more wins. Nelson’s teams have won nearly 75 percent of their matches since she arrived on campus, including eight regional titles and nine conference championships. Nelson’s teams have finished in the top 11 at the national tournament in nine of the last 10 seasons, including a national runner-up in 2010.
Nelson was the 2010 and 2012 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Southwest Region Two-Year Coach of the Year, and has earned eight Region XIV coach of the year honors. A product of Alvin High School, she went on to attend Alvin Community College, where she was an all-conference, all-region, all-American, and academic all-region selection. She then went on to play at Eastern New Mexico University, where she was a two-time all-conference and academic all-American.
