PASADENA, Texas – San Jacinto College Men’s Soccer Head Coach Ian Spooner has announced the 2015 schedule, which includes seven home games, and two matchups (home-and-home) with instate and conference rival, and defending national champion, Tyler Junior College. In total, San Jac will take to the field 17 times during the regular season.
“We have a really exciting and challenging schedule this year,” said Spooner, who enters his fourth year at the helm of the program, his eighth overall at San Jac. “We will test ourselves early with just two non-conference games before we get into conference play, so how we prepare in the preseason is critical.”
San Jac, which went 9-11 last year, opens the season Sept. 2 at Western Texas College. The first home game of the season is Sept. 7 against Richland College, last season’s National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DIII national runner-up. San Jac’s first Region XIV game is Sept. 11 at Paris Junior College, followed by a conference game against Northeast Texas College, a national top-10 team, on Sept. 11. San Jac returns home Sept. 18 and 20 to take on Laredo Community College and Coastal Bend College, before closing out the month of Sept. on the road at perennial powerhouse Tyler Junior College (Sept. 25) and Jacksonville College (Sept. 26).
“We encourage our fans and supporters to come out to the soccer field on the South Campus for all of our home games,” added Spooner. “Admission is free, so bring your family to watch some competitive collegiate soccer.”
For the month of Oct., the team will split time at home and on the road. The month starts out at the Richland College Invitational, Oct. 2 and 4, in Dallas. San Jac will face Kansas City Community College and Richland College, respectively. The squad then heads home for a three-game stint, starting Oct. 9 against Paris Junior College. Northeast Texas comes to town on Oct. 11, followed by Jacksonville College on Oct. 14. San Jac rounds out the month of Oct. at Laredo Community College (Oct. 16), at Coastal Bend College (Oct. 17), at home against Tyler on Oct. 21, and then at Hill College, another national top-20 team, on Oct. 23.
The 2015 Region XIV Tournament will be held Oct. 28 and 31 at a location still to be determined. The District Championship is scheduled for Nov. 6 – 8, and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national championship tournament is Nov. 16 – 21 in Martinsville, Virginia.
San Jacinto College returns eight players from last year’s squad, including all-Region XIV selection Prince Ihenacho and the 2014 team newcomer of the year Roberto Diaz Fernandez.
