Jazz festival and master classes coming to San Jacinto College

03.19.2014 | By Andrea Vasquez

The Gulf Coast Intercollegiate Consortium (GCIC) Jazz Festival will be hosted at the San Jacinto College South Campus on Saturday, April 12.

GCIC is a partnership among the music and visual art departments of the nine community colleges in the greater Houston area. GCIC co-sponsors guest clinicians, portfolio reviewers, and juried student competitions with its member institutions, which enhance the academic experience for the students and allow them to develop professional practice.

The annual GCIC Jazz Festival welcomes jazz ensembles and bands from the GCIC member colleges. Each band performs several prepared pieces that are critiqued by three judges who are expert musicians in the field. Band performances will be held throughout the day beginning at 8 a.m. and are free and open the public.

The festival also includes a free master class by this year’s guest artist, world-renowned saxophone player, James Carter. Carter has performed and recorded with jazz legends and iconic artists from around the world including Aretha Franklin, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Carter’s master class begins at 12 p.m., and at 7:30 p.m., the festival will conclude with a directors’ concert featuring Carter and the directors of the GCIC jazz bands. Admission to the concert is $15 or free with a student ID. All band performances, master class, and directors’ concert will be held in the Proscenium Theatre.

In addition to the GCIC Jazz Festival, GCIC is also sponsoring a guitar master class on April 15 with celebrated classic guitarist and professor, Dr. Isaac Bustos. His extensive performing career has taken him all over the U.S., Canada, Central America, and Europe. Bustos has also performed in numerous worldwide guitar festivals and competitions. Since 2005, Bustos has served as head of guitar studies at Texas A&M University Department of Performance Studies and is artistic director of the Texas A&M International Guitar Symposium and Competition.

The guitar master class with Dr. Isaac Bustos begins at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, in room S15.115. The class is free and open to the public. To register, contact San Jacinto College guitar professor Jeremy Garcia at jeremy.garcia@sjcd.edu.

Both the GCIC Jazz Festival and guitar master class will be held in the Marie Spence Flickinger Fine Arts Center at the South Campus, located at 13735 Beamer Road in Houston. For more information on GCIC events, visit gcictexas.weebly.com.
