HOUSTON - Ian Spooner, San Jacinto College men’s soccer head coach, has released the 2016 schedule. The team has 10 home games scheduled, seven of which will be Region XIV matches, and two matchups against San Jac’s rival and last year’s national runner-up, Tyler Junior College.

“The schedule will be very challenging this year from start to finish,” said Spooner, who has been with the team for four seasons. “We want to play the top teams, so I have no doubt the guys will be up for the challenge.”

San Jac will open its season with two home games against the University of St. Thomas and Our Lady of the Lake University on Aug. 13 and 17. They will then head to San Antonio to face the University of the Incarnate Word, before ending the month in Mississippi against nationally ranked Eastern Florida State College (Aug. 26) and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (Aug. 27).

“It will be a good test for the guys to start on the road against a very talented Eastern Florida team, the third ranked team in the nation, and a quality Mississippi Gulf Coast team at their home field,” said Spooner.

In September San Jac will begin Region XIV play with four home games against Angelina College, Mountain View College, Northeast Texas Community College and Paris Junior College. The team will then hit the road Sept. 16 and 17 to face Coastal Bend College and Laredo Community College. On Sept. 23 and 24 the team will see two home games against last year’s national runner-up Tyler Junior College and Jacksonville College. The team will bring the month to a close in Angelina versus Angelina College.

San Jac will see 10 games in October, three of which will be at home against Coastal Bend College (Oct. 14), Laredo Community College (Oct. 15) and Southwest Christian College (Oct. 22). The remaining seven games will be spent on the road against nationally ranked Richland College (Oct. 2), Northeast Texas Community College (Oct. 7), Paris Junior College (Oct. 8), Jacksonville College (Oct. 11) and Tyler Junior College (Oct. 19).

The Region XIV Tournament will take place Oct. 26 - 29 and the district championship will be on Nov. 4 - 6. The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national championship is scheduled for Nov. 16 - 21 in Tyler.

“It will be a long and grueling season, so we have to make sure the team is in good shape. We will start two-a-day training sessions in August,” Spooner concludes. “Team building will also be very important to our team’s success this season; we have to make sure that all the guys are on the same page and not putting themselves before the team. If we can do these things, we should have a great opportunity to go far in the postseason.”

Last season the team went 12-6-1 overall, ranking them second in Region XIV. Returning to the team is Juan David Agredo, Jefrey Hernandez, Hikaruhito Meike, Luis Almedia, Ricardo Ramos, Antone Jarvis, Jorge Callejas, Brayan Gomez and Kosta Vastakis.
