‘Partners in STEM’ to be on display at the Houston Museum of Natural Science

Jeannie Peng-Armao -- November 14, 2013

PASADENA, Texas – San Jacinto College invites the public to the STEM Council kickoff event, “Partners in STEM,” on Nov. 22 at the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

Attendees will have an opportunity to learn more about how San Jacinto College is developing initiatives to increase student interest and educational opportunities in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

Formed this year, the STEM Council strives to increase awareness of education and career opportunities in STEM by sponsoring activities open to the public throughout the year, working with community members to promote STEM fields to K-12 students, and forming partnerships with universities and industries for workforce training and education. In the Houston metroplex, 52 percent of the STEM jobs require an associate degree, according to The Brookings Institution. In result, San Jacinto College considers STEM education a high priority because local industries are asking for more workers with skills in these areas, according to the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee.

The “Partners in STEM” event will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets are $50 and may be purchased at www.sanjac.edu/STEM-registration. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. The Houston Museum of Natural Science is located at 5555 Hermann Park Drive in Houston.
